SOLID GOLD 60'S TOUR-THE BASINGSTOKE EXPERIENCE
The evening of the February 27th duly came, with my wife Sylvia and myself eagerly approaching THE ANVIL to see Helen in the Solid Gold 60's tour! John had telephoned during the week, and persuaded us to help sell Helen's CD's during the interval. There he was at a table brimful of HELEN SHAPIRO goodies, and having introduced ourselves, he briefed us about the prices, and anticipated that we would be VERY busy during the interval! Even at this stage people were wanting to purchase CD s, and who were we to stop them?! By 7:45 it was time to take our seats and enjoy the show....
After an excellent 30 min set by THE SWINGING BLUE JEANS, Helen came on and was greeted very politely by the audience. She started off with IN THE GROOVE, followed by KEEP ON RUNNING (A Spencer Davis hit), and then a Beatles number: CAN'T BUY ME LOVE. These songs really warmed the audience up, and after apologising for a throat infection, which I don't think anybody realised she had, she proceeded to sing her SIXTIES MEDLEY, which was greeted with an enthusiastic wave of applause from the audience. She quickly launched into WALKIN' BACK TO HAPPINESS; QUEEN FOR TONIGHT, ; FEVER; YOU DON'T KNOW; LITTLE MISS LONELY; TELL ME WHAT HE SAID; DON'T TREAT ME LIKE A CHILD (not necessarily in that order!)All too soon Helen had come to the end of her set, and it was time for the interval.
The 20 minute interval passed very quickly, with a non stop queue of people purchasing albums and programmes, and asking Helen to autograph them. We completely sold out of the autobiography, and most of the Gospel Albums! 'The Essential Collection' also sold very well.
Now back to the show to enjoy a fantastic performance from THE SEARCHERS.... All in all, a very enjoyable evening.....
Don't forget to let me have YOUR review of the tour!
