SKEGBY artist Steve Fisher presents his portrait of singing star Helen
Shapiro following her performance at Mansfield Palace Theatre on 23rd October 2002.
Helen was born in Bethnal Green and brought up in the East End of London. With the release of her single " Don't Treat Me Like A Child (No.3)" , " You Don't Know (No.1)" , " Walkin' Back to Happiness (No.1)" and " Tell Me What He Said (No.2) " at the tender age of fourteen she achieved International Stardom, following up these hits with a half dozen more plus best selling EP's and LP's. She appeared many times as a London Paladium headliner and topped the bill in her first Nationwide tour of Britain with the Beatles as her support Act!
She has won many awards including the Variety Club's Silver Heart as the Most Promising Newcomer,The Melody Maker Award for Britain's most popular female vocalist and many many more.
Steve has been featured in the Chad on other occasions, having produced portraits - painted on glass - for stars like singer Marty Wilde, comedian Lee Evans and Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys fame.
After his latest presentation, he told the Chad " Helen was really chuffed. I'd grown up listening to her music and so I decided to paint a portrait. She was a lovely woman. She signed autographs and she had time for eveybody."
The Chad recently published a photograph of a young Helen with John Lennon when she appeared in Mansfield at the height of her fame...supported by the Beatles (see photo below).
" One of the things I wanted to ask her about was John Lennon " said Steve. " I asked her what he was like and she said he was like a big brother to her. If there was any trouble he looked after her."
